The Sacrament of Penance
Also known as Confession or Reconciliation, Penance is the sacrament that allows people to have their souls cleansed of sin and their relationship with God restores. Penance reunites the soul with God, even after a mortal sin has been committed. It can increase our sanctifying grace and wash away the shadow of sin from a person's soul. The sacrament of Penance takes place when a person confesses all of their sins to a priest, who acts as an "agent of God".
Other religions, such as the Orthodox Church share almost the same views about confession as the Catholic Church, and they carry out their ritual very similar to the Catholic Church as well. However religions such as the Protestants, do not feel as though such rituals are needed to be forgiven for sins. They do not believe Penance to be very important and can just absolve their sins by praying.
